    First trip to Costa Rica!

    February 18, 2020 / No Comments

What a wonderful week! Special thanks to Cindy & Ron for inviting me to fly down and join them. And to their daughter, Alex and son-in-law-, AJ for making me feel so welcome and driving us around! I flew into San Jose – a simple 3 hour flight out of Miami. The rest of the group arrived late that evening (from frozen Canada) and we spent the night at La Riviera Hotel in San Antonio, which has a free shuttle from the airport. Cindy and Ron had hired a driver to take us across to Jaco which takes about 1 1/2 hours depending on traffic. January – March is heavy…

Well after a bit of a forced hiatus, Dr. Pat is fi Well after a bit of a forced hiatus, Dr. Pat is finally back in London! We’ve brought students here twice for comparative studies of our respective health systems, published our book through Routledge here (sorry Routledge New York), discovered La Gaffe, and just come over for the hell of it. Welcome back Dr. Pat!
Happy Mother’s Day! My mother was the wisest and Happy Mother’s Day! My mother was the wisest and most quotable woman I have known. And although her body died 37 years ago, she has never really left me. When my life has been hard, I always knew what she would say.

Her mother also died young, a woman whose husband walked out on her at the beginning of the depression when my mother was 3. She supported my mother by running a beauty shop out of her home all by herself through the depression and WWII. Here is the quote that hung on her wall. My gift to all the badass women out there and one I live by:

“Don’t explain.
Your friends don’t need it,
And your enemies wouldn’t believe you anyway“. ❤️
Setting into life in London means exploring new ne Setting into life in London means exploring new neighborhoods. Today I walked. A lot. From Hampstead to Swiss Cottage, where there is a great library and large supermarkets including Waitrose.

Then I realized that the Northern Line now goes all the way to Battersea Power Station so that was pleasant. The Old Power Station is mostly shops now but impressive and there are lots of places to sit and enjoy the bustle of the Thames.
Amazing place here in Hastings and a nice change. Amazing place here in Hastings and a nice change. Hands down, the curry goat is the best curry I’ve ever had. Full stop. Just the right amount of spice and perfect with rice and peas. I started with a beef patty that was so much bigger than the Jamaician beef patties I’m used to - delicious just huge! #caribdelafrique
I know many associate the coronation of King Charl I know many associate the coronation of King Charles with London, but there are celebrations all across the UK. I wanted to experience something with less of a mob, transportation issues, and the overall crush. So I’ve chosen to spend coronation weekend down in Hastings. I came down here last year and really enjoyed it. It’s an easy hour by train from London.

My plans, like everyone else’s, is weather dependent. I hope to be able to watch the coronation on a big screen. We shall see. I’ll keep you posted y’all.
I am trying to settle into life here in London. It I am trying to settle into life here in London. It’s somehow comforting to know that many of my fellow passengers are also having to adjust after this amazing adventure around the world.

Having said that, London has felt like home for me for so long now, it’s comforting to be back. I’ve walked the Heath, explored the back lanes of Hampstead, and tried a dim sum restaurant for the first time! Thank you James Bell for walking me through the dim sum process and explaining some of the history of Soho.
It’s cold and rainy here in London. But I feel s It’s cold and rainy here in London. But I feel so much relief since my daughter Mallory has done so well after her surgery. After a couple of stressful days, I feel like I can just settle in and enjoy the damp. Life is good y’all ❤️
My first full day in London and I was able to meet My first full day in London and I was able to meet up with 2 of my Queen Victoria gin bar buddies, Pat and Colleen Williams and their friend, James Bell. What fun! Thanks for a great evening. Safe travels back to San Francisco Pat & Colleen!
My world voyage is almost over and words fail me t My world voyage is almost over and words fail me to describe the memories I will carry off this ship. Our last port of call was Lisbon yesterday. I didn’t take many pictures. I savored the day, ate some delicious food and drank a bit of wine. I created a memory that was a bit magical. What more could I ask for?

I’m going to enjoy my last 2 nights onboard before heading into the next adventure ❤️ Yes, life is good.
